چکیده

A report on the development of a software architecture to facilitate interactions between a person and a humanoid robot is given. The architecture employs independent, asynchronous software agents that run in parallel on a set of PCs in a local area network. It comprises four major components: a Self Agent which controls the robot’s general interactions with the world and monitors its own status, a human agent which models the person and controls the robot’s interaction with her or him, a spatiotemporal short-term memory called the Sensory EgoSphere, and a long-term memory called the DataBase Associative Memory. The structures of these components and a description of their interactions is given. Current research efforts in learning and emotion are described. Outstanding problems are listed. Keywords– Robotics, Humanoids, Software agents, Affective Computing, Kansei, Sensory Ego-Sphere.

Towards a Uni ed Framework for Human-Humanoid Interaction

In order for a humanoid robot to be accepted in society and perform as an intelligent human assistant or companion, it must be equipped with a robust human-humanoid interaction (HHI) and task learning mechanisms. This paper describes our eeort to achieve a robust HHI mechanism based on a multi-agent architecture called the Intelligent Machine Architecture (IMA), two high-level agents called the...

A Parallel Distributed Cognitive Control System for a Humanoid Robot

During the last decade, researchers at Vanderbilt have been developing a humanoid robot called the Intelligent Soft Arm Control (ISAC). This paper describes ISAC in terms of its software components and with respect to the design philosophy that has evolved over the course of its development. Central to the control system is a parallel, distributed software architecture, comprising a set of inde...

ISAC: foundations in human-humanoid interaction - Intelligent Systems, IEEE [see also IEEE Expert]

AT THE INTELLIGENT ROBOTICS Laboratory of Vanderbilt University’s Center for Intelligent Systems, over the past several years we have been developing a humanoid system called Intelligent Soft-Arm Control. We originally developed ISAC as a robotic aid system for the physically disabled (see Figure 1).1 It has since evolved into a test bed for human–humanoid interaction research.2,3 While working...

Flexible Foot/Ankle Based on PKM with Force/Torque Sensor for Humanoid Robot

This paper describes the development of a novel humanoid robot foot/ankle based on an orientation Parallel Kinematic Mechanism for intelligent and flexible control. With three identical Universal-Prismatic-Spherical prismatic-actuated limbs and a central Universal-Revolute passive limb, the PKM can perform three degrees of freedom rotation motions. In order to enable the humanoid robot safely t...

A Software Agent Based Control System for Human-Robot Interaction

The software control system for ISAC is described. ISAC is a humanoid robot designed and built by researchers at the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory in the Center for Intelligent Systems at Vanderbilt University. The robot was designed for close human interaction with the goal of enabling it to become intelligent. Possible requirements for intelligence in a robot are presented with reasons for ...
